Is cement board waterproof?

Cement board is not waterproof - it's water-resistant but still requires proper waterproofing behind it in wet areas like showers and tub surrounds.

Cement board (like Hardiebacker or Durock) is an excellent tile substrate because it won't deteriorate when exposed to moisture like drywall would. However, water can still penetrate through the board itself and especially through the seams between panels. This is why proper waterproofing is critical before installing cement board in any wet area.

In shower areas, you need a waterproof membrane applied to the framing before installing the cement board. This could be a liquid-applied membrane, sheet membrane like Kerdi, or traditional poly sheeting (though modern membranes are preferred). The cement board then gets installed over this waterproof barrier, creating a solid base for tile while keeping water away from the framing.

For Ottawa bathroom renovations, the Ontario Building Code requires proper waterproofing in all wet areas. Many contractors also apply an additional waterproof membrane over the cement board seams and screw holes before tiling, creating a double barrier system.
