Which framing carries an Ottawa shower bench?

A shower bench is typically supported by one of three framing approaches, and the right choice depends on your shower layout and bench design.

The most common method is a built-in knee wall, which is a short framed wall (usually 2x4 or 2x6 studs) that forms the front face of the bench. This knee wall sits on the shower floor, ties into the back wall framing, and carries the weight of the tile, mortar bed, and anyone sitting on the bench. It's the most structurally sound option for a permanent tiled bench and is what most Ottawa contractors use for custom tile showers.

Blocking between studs is the second key framing element. Even with a knee wall, the back wall where the bench meets it needs solid horizontal blocking — typically 2x6 or 2x8 lumber — installed between the studs at bench height (usually 17–19 inches from the finished floor). This blocking gives the bench a solid substrate to bear against and prevents any flex or movement that could crack your tile or grout over time.

Corner benches use a slightly different approach, with a triangular platform framed using pressure-treated lumber or moisture-resistant materials, with blocking anchored into two adjoining walls. The framing still needs to be rigid — any movement in a wet environment will eventually compromise your waterproofing.

From an Ottawa building perspective, the framing itself doesn't typically trigger a separate permit, but it's part of the overall shower construction that should be done correctly before waterproofing membranes and tile go on. Once tile is installed, there's no fixing a poorly framed bench without tearing it out.

The critical rule regardless of framing type is that all wood framing in a shower environment should be protected by a continuous waterproof membrane — cement board, Schluter Kerdi, or a liquid-applied membrane — before any tile is set. Exposed or inadequately protected framing will rot, and that's an expensive repair.
