Can I use Ditra instead of cement board in a shower?

Ditra can be used in a shower, but with an important distinction: standard Ditra is not approved for wet areas like showers — you need Ditra-Heat or, more importantly, Schluter's Kerdi membrane system for shower walls and floors.

Understanding the Schluter System

Schluter makes several products that work together, and it's easy to confuse them. Standard Ditra (the orange matting) is an uncoupling membrane designed for tile floors — it handles crack isolation and waterproofing for floor applications, but it's not a complete shower waterproofing solution on its own. For showers, Schluter's answer is the Kerdi system, which uses Kerdi membrane on walls and Kerdi-Band at seams and transitions, creating a fully bonded waterproof assembly.

Ditra vs. Cement Board in a Shower Context

Traditional cement board (like Durock or Wonderboard) is also not waterproof on its own — it requires a separate waterproofing membrane applied over top before tiling.
