When it makes sense is usually tied to a specific functional problem — the toilet is awkwardly placed relative to the door swing, the layout feels cramped, or you're reconfiguring the whole bathroom to gain usable space. If moving it even 12–18 inches dramatically improves the flow of the room, it can absolutely be worth the added cost.

The cost reality is where most homeowners pause. Moving a toilet isn't just about the fixture itself — it means relocating the drain line, which requires opening the subfloor and potentially the ceiling below if you're on an upper floor.
